Lisa: At the time all this was happening I was teaching Information Technology and International Business for a major adult continuing education program. I brought the actual text of the Act and the DoJ rules in to discuss with the class, hoping to provoke some sense of outrage. Unfortunately, I did not get any outrage, just mild interest. Perhaps the media is now the opiate of the masses.

What is needed is an INDEPENDENT emergency adjudication board capable of PROMPTLY overriding insurance company "death panel" denial and delay decisions! This board would be staffed by independent medical professionals. One of the "triggers" for the establishment of a public option would be that should the amount of and egregiousness of "death panel" reversals exceed a certain threshold, the government could then petition the courts for the company to be placed in receivership and stockholder equity wiped out! Under these circumstances, the stockholders would now have a direct stake in the company operating for the common public good and interest!

I agree. I am very sceptical about the non-political reasoning behind the bailout. What I disliked the most about it was the fact that they gave all that money to the automotive industry. There still are people out there that are suffering because of the crisis and are still having problems because of all the wrong decisions made.

It's notable that McCaughey's employers aren't standing behind her: She had to resign from the board she served on, and recently she's vanished from the web site of the Hudson Institute, which has been her employer ever since she left New York state government. I guess the Hudson Institute doesn't buy her denials....

Dear Mike: While I reject your criticism, well-intentioned though it may be, I think our Founding Fathers captured my views on the issues you raise the most eloquently: Amendment IV The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized. I make no apologies for defending America's constitutional democracy. Lisa
