ghost writers promoting breast cancer ? It was definitely high time to call ghostbusters.

The obligation of disclosing corporate sponsors is one thing, but it would be also interesting to have all authors sign a statement confirming the fact that they have no link nor interest.

They would be legally binded, and could be prosecuted as accomplices in a lawsuit against the drug companies.

On the other hand, I'm not sure publications are ready for this kind of transparency.

And you think that the deceit put out by corporatization is better? As a person who rarely needed medical care until I was injured, I learned that my husband's pension was with the deceitful United Health Care, an insurer who paid 20% of the visits to the doctor, 20% to the hospital, and 20% to physical therapy. All of the costs from those three outlets were far greater than UHC paid. Fortunately, Medicare picked up some, but we paid the most. So much for private insurance. I was dropped earlier than the surgeon desired from P/T because of the insurance company and if I get injured again, I will not be able to have the beneficial pool physical therapy, which the doctor suggested I needed and of which I also found helpful. Medication takes the cap off the pain, P/T strengthens my body and rehabilitates me. UAL is no longer accepted by P/T companies because they don't pay a fair rate. I don't trust private insurance companies after United Health Care. In my opinion, the private health industry cares only about taking my money and keeping me unwell!

I have good friends who are good people and who wouldn't hurt a soul. But they are so afraid of what they're hearing about changes to health care. Like some of the people shown in town hall and other community meetings, they fear "socialism," yet accept medicare and social security benefits without a second thought. They don't understand that universal health care is not synonymous with nationalized health care. I've worked as a dietitian in acute and long-term care for 20 years and have a master's in health policy. I understand the desperate need for reform and I speak the language of the citizens. Why can't we send people like me into the trenches to listen to people, get yelled at, explain the proposed legislation, listen to original ideas? There's no way elected officials can cover the masses of Americans who just want answers. Health care is too important a piece of our economy for reform to fail this time. If we fix health care, we fix almost everything.

This is an excellent article, thank you. I find it interesting when people say "they have read" the bill and it's scary. This is odd because there are four bills and they have not been finalized. Moreover, no one is able to adequately explain what exactly is "scary" about government and health care, given how abdominal our current system is, where the private sector driven by profits, already make coverage decisions and most are made outside of client or public interest.
