Like most people I've been watching this disaster with horror, dismay and anger at the spin. The way this disaster is being reported reminds me of Chernobyl when we were being told that the Radiation leak was in so many "Becquerels" Who knew what a becquerel was? and how could anyone relate to it. this disaster is being reported in exactly the same way, in terms that make it dificult to comprehend but with a little human interest thrown in here and there. One last point. I don't believe for minute that BP will pay for the clean up or anything else. Sure they'll front the money but in the end prices will go up and we will pay for it all at the pump.

I wouldn't be surprised if the US knew about these reserves before invading the country in 2001. After all, they did get rid of a regime that had controlled the heroine supply levels down to an unprecedented level and installed a puppet regime subservient to the American Generals.

The underlying problem lies with the lobbying power of the Oil cartels and of political grandstanding. In the US, if Obama had not responded the way he did, he would surely have suffered at the midterm elections. However, his rhetoric has possibly been very heavy-handed causing an enormous dip in BP's share price. At the end of the day, this was an act of political grandstanding. On the other end of the spectrum, the lobbying power of the oil firms operating in Africa is so immense that you would never hear of the crimes committed by Shell in Nigeria. Furthermore, the oil rich Delta region has a governor who is facing corruption charges for embezzling millions of dollars of state funds!

It seems like the appropriate role here for government would be to get accurate information out to the public. Then, people can make an educated decision on what cigarettes to buy. Banning certain words seems to be an over-reach.
