Democrat Donna Edwards was elected to the House or Representatives Wednesday in a special election for Maryland's 4th congressional district. She will fill the remaining term for former Rep. Al Wynn, who resigned at the end of May. Edwards defeated Wynn in a February primary election, and Republican Peter James in the special election Wednesday.
Edwards becomes the first black woman to represent Maryland in Congress, but will still have to win November's general election race — also against James — to retain her seat. With very low turnout in the district yesterday, she took more than 80 percent of the vote, so Edwards is a clear favorite heading into November. Once sworn in on Friday, Edwards will increase the Democratic caucus in the House to 236 seats, to 199 for Republicans.
